Test and System Engineering
Client Profile:
Leading world wide disk drive manufacturer.
Task:
Client needed to automate the system to probe Read/Write channel chip located on Flex Circuit cable inside drive assembly, during Servo Writing operation, which was being done manually by the Servo Writer operators.
Solution:
This was a particularly difficult mechanical challenge given the small physical size of the chip, contacts to be probed, and the space constraints around it. An IDI Microseries pogo pin receptacle size 00, with a SOOU self cleaning, gold plated plunger was selected for the probing. The pins were mounted on a multi-layered self locating probe head with a retaining plate. The probe assembly utilized the outer shape of the chip to self locate the pins on the right position over the contact points, through a spring loaded guide frame. This feature also served as a guard to protect the pins against damage.
Expanding on the existing ramp loading mechanism of the Servo Writer, it was redesigned so that the probe will automatically come down and make contact at the end of the drive loading action. The probe will disconnect and move out of the way as the drive is unloaded.
Design and Development
Client Profile:
Leading world wide Disk Drive Recording Head Manufacturer.
Task:
Client needed to upgrade the capabilities of an existing spinstand tester to accommodate the test requirements for the new Magneto Resistive (MR) recording heads. These heads need to be tested for track profile performance which in turn demands the tester to perform moves in the micro inch (millionth of an inch) region.
Solution:
In order to provide positioning capabilities with the required resolutions, the existing tester had to be changed from an open loop linear positioning system to a closed loop positioning system, composed of one linear and one rotary servo controlled stages. To accurately provide the resolutions required, both stages had to be based on laser interferometry devices. The mechanical design and the fabrication of parts as well as the assembly and calibration of these new units needed the qualified engineering knowledge along with exacting tolerances in the fabrication processes.
Tannen Engineering Services was a key contributor in the development of these new spinstand testers as well as the integrator of choice to provide the full turnkey production units. These units will be supported both locally and overseas.
